What happy people know

There is a movement that is about 15 or 20 years old called “Positive psychology” which was made credible and brought to public attention by Dr. Martin Seligman, a former President of the American Psychological Association.

Yesterday, I was browsing in the aisle of my local independent bookstore, Liftbridge Books, in downtown Brockport, NY, where I saw this book in the self help section entitled, “What Happy People Know”. It immediately made me think of Seligman’s positive psychology, but when I picked it up and browsed in it, I was kind of disappointed because it seemed to have a lot of anecdotal kind of stuff which I can find in the Chicken Soup For The Soul series. I didn’t buy the book.

But I did decide to start my own series of articles on my web log addressing the same question “What Do Happy People Know?”

If you know something that makes you happy and it would be something that might be of use to others either enter it in the comment section of each article, or email me at david@davidgmarkham.com

Thanks and as Boby McFerrin sang, "Don't worry. Be happy!"

You should be wary of writing review of books you haven't read. I am wary of looking at anything else on your site because you have done that.

Dan Baker's book contains a extensive discussion of brain chemistry than any of the 3 dozen other self help, healing, and "get over depression" books i've read.

This book helped me wake up everyday feeling like a 6.5 out of 10 instead of a 3 by using my "higher brain" to wrestle control of my perception away from my amydala.

For people with dysthemia in particular this is a CONSTANT struggle as supported by articles in the "complete guide to mental health for women" recently published.

In fact, dan baker discusses Dr. Seligman's reseach which is how I found your site...looking for more on his work.

Great Post! It helped me to make sense of some of the issues with the subject. I find your style very informative and can’t wait to read more. There is another good blog on the law of attraction that I was going through some time back.

I’m so glad that I have found your post. I have been unsure of this topic for some time and you have enabled me to understand it a whole lot better. I really appreciate it. I was reading a post a while ago that helped me in the same way that yours has.

What can I say about your writing but “wow” – you really know your subject and put your points across well. I can’t wait for your next post. I’ve found a guy who is good to read too will pass the details on when I find them.

I agree with the first person. I read this book and for the first time in a long time I felt happy, and free of anxiety. It may seem simple but it's the simplicity of his words that speak so true to everyone. Things do not need to be complicated to work. You should never judge a book by it's cover, especially when it's a book.

I am of those who believe that happiness is not in bars or nightclubs, have always believed that happiness is depending on how you are with yourself, happiness is in God and in your decisions
